Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the questions from 13 to 22.
Over the past few decades, significant strides have been made in reducing air pollution. Stricter environmental regulations, the decline of coal power, and the transition to cleaner energy sources have dramatically decreased levels of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) in the atmosphere. This progress has brought undeniable benefits: improved public health, clearer skies, and a reduction in acid rain.
However, emerging research suggests that these environmental gains may come with an unintended consequence – an acceleration of global warming. This seemingly contradictory outcome is now referred to as a climate paradox. While SO₂ is a harmful pollutant, it has long played an unexpected role in moderating Earth’s temperature. [I] Sulphate particles derived from SO₂ increase the reflectivity of clouds, causing more sunlight to bounce back into space. This process, known as global dimming, exerted a subtle cooling influence that partially offset the effects of greenhouse gases. As nations succeed in cutting SO₂ emissions, this cooling buffer is diminishing – exposing the planet to greater levels of solar radiation. [II]
Satellite data from recent years has revealed a measurable decline in Earth’s reflectivity, or albedo, indicating that less sunlight is being deflected and more is being absorbed. This shift may explain the unusually rapid warming observed since the early 2000s. Rather than pointing to a sudden jump in climate sensitivity, the trend could be a temporary side effect of cleaner air. [III]
This paradox should not be seen as a reason to halt pollution control. The benefits of cleaner air – especially for human health – are indisputable. Rather, it underscores the urgent need to tackle the root cause of global warming: carbon emissions. As the unintended cooling mask fades, the full impact of climate change becomes more visible. In addressing one crisis, we can no longer afford to ignore another. [IV] Climate solutions must therefore be comprehensive, calibrated, and forward-looking – recognising the delicate trade-offs inherent in environmental progress.
Question 13: According to paragraph 2, human attempts to address one environmental problem ____.
A. can inadvertently exacerbate another
B. may backfire if integrated with other solutions
C. will expose the fragility of Earth’s balance
D. will always lead to a climate paradox
Question 14: Where in the passage does the following sentence best fit?
“Nevertheless, the result is the same: the world is heating more quickly than expected.”
A. [II]
B. [IV]
C. [III]
D. [I]
Question 15: What may contribute to faster warming trends since the early 2000s?
A. The persistence of high albedo, preventing heat from escaping into space
B. The continuous deflection of sunlight, keeping less energy near the Earth’s surface
C. The inconsistent balance between sunlight reflected and sunlight absorbed
D. A decline in Earth’s reflectivity, causing more sunlight to be absorbed
Question 16: Which of the following best summarises paragraph 1?
A. Cleaner air from reduced SO₂ has benefited health and the environment, but may be accelerating global warming.
B. Recent environmental changes improved public health, but warming results mainly from coal power and acid rain.
C. Stricter rules and cleaner fuels have reduced pollution, bringing clearer skies and healthier living worldwide.
D. Stricter regulations have improved air quality by cutting SO₂, but this progress seems to have a temporary impact.
Question 17: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an attempt to reduce air pollution?
A. Shifting towards cleaner energy sources
B. Moving away from coal power
C. Improving public health
D. Tougher environmental rules
Question 18: The phrase “the trend” in paragraph 3 refers to _______.
A. the unusually rapid warming since the early 2000s
B. a measurable decline in Earth’s reflectivity
C. a temporary side effect of cleaner air
D. a sudden jump in climate sensitivity
Question 19: Which of the following best summarises the passage?
A. Declining albedo has revealed rapid warming, yet stricter regulations suggest climate sensitivity itself has increased rather than cleaner air causing temporary acceleration.
B. SO₂ reductions improved air quality and reduced acid rain, but their removal accelerated warming, showing pollution control creates unavoidable trade-offs in environmental progress.
C. Reducing SO₂ improved health and skies, yet weakened cooling effects accelerated warming, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive climate action on carbon emissions.
D. Cleaner air from reduced coal and new energy sources has brought undeniable health benefits, while rapid warming since the 2000s reflects inevitable climate change.
Question 20: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. As societies continue addressing pollution without confronting carbon emissions, a new era of global warming is certain.
B. Addressing the climate crisis demands policies that actively account for Earth’s feedback systems.
C. As the ‘mask’ of pollution lifts, warming may appear to surge as fast as previous models predicted.
D. Human activities have been manipulating climate dynamics in ways we will never fully grasp.
Question 21: Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 4?
“Rather, it underscores the urgent need to tackle the root cause of global warming: carbon emissions.”
A. By pointing to carbon emissions – the central driver of global warming – the paradox accentuates the urgency of confronting them.
B. It is the urgent demand to confront global warming that causes the paradox to emphasise carbon emissions as the primary factor.
C. Not until the main source of global warming is curbed do carbon emissions appear, in the paradox, as an urgent concern.
D. Were the paradox to accentuate the immediacy of climate action, carbon emissions would already have been addressed as the chief culprit.
Question 22: The word “offset” in paragraph 2 mostly means _______.
A. mitigate
B. exploit
C. observe
D. regulate

From melting arctic ice caps to forest fires, global warming is heating up the planet and damaging the Earth’s ecosystems. Global warming is the rise of the Earth’s temperatures caused by an increase of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. Global warming has (34) INCREASED very much in the past 100 years because people are using more and more electricity and driving more cars. We are also cutting down more trees that clean the air.
Scientists have been studying the effects of global warming on different ecosystems for a long time and what they have found is quite (35) WORRYING. The rising temperatures have caused many problems in ecosystems. Arctic ice is melting, causing sea levels to rise and floods in (36) SEASIDE areas. As a result, animals and plants are losing their homes. As oceans and rivers become warmer, the water temperatures keep changing. Some marine animals cannot live in these new conditions. Since the 1970s, populations of fish in lakes and rivers have decreased by 76 percent.
Global warming is also causing extreme weather events. Other ecosystems, like deserts and grasslands, are experiencing terrible (37) DROUGHTS and certain wildlife and plant species that depend on water are dying. Due to the high temperatures, wildfires are destroying whole ecosystems such as forests. There has been a serious rise in (38) ENDANGERED species in recent years that could result in many animals becoming extinct. The loss of plants and animals causes problems for all living things in an ecosystem. We need to take action to stop global warming and save the Earth’s ecosystems before it’s too late.
