Successful students often do the following while studying: they get an overview before reading, focus on important information, connect key ideas, and use prior knowledge. When they notice poor understanding, they change strategies and correct mistakes quickly.
In contrast, students with low academic achievement usually have ineffective study habits. They assume a passive role and rely on others (teachers, parents) to monitor their work. They often don’t check their understanding, lack awareness of study purposes, and rarely use “fix-up” strategies. Many do not plan, organize, or judge the quality of their studying, leading to disorganization and missed deadlines.
Unlike good students who use varied, flexible study methods, low-achieving students rely on a limited set of ineffective techniques. They cannot explain why study strategies matter and often use the same approach for every task, regardless of content or difficulty.
