ĐẶNG THÙY TRÂM – A LIFE OF COURAGE AND DEDICATION
Đặng Thùy Trâm was born in Huế in 1942 and grew up in a family that valued education. She studied medicine in Ha Noi and became a doctor. At the age of twenty-four, she volunteered to work in a field hospital in Quảng Ngãi Province during the resistance war against the United States.
Life at the hospital was extremely difficult and dangerous. Despite a shortage of medicine and equipment, Trâm treated wounded soldiers and local people with great care. While she was working there, she kept a diary in which she recorded her daily experiences, thoughts and feelings. She also wrote about her love for her family and her country.
In 1970, Đặng Thùy Trâm was killed while she was performing her duty. She was only twenty-seven years old. An American soldier later found her diary. Instead of destroying it, he kept it because he was deeply moved by her words. Many years later, the diary was returned to her family.
The diary was eventually published in Việt Nam and translated into several languages. It has helped readers around the world understand the courage, hopes and sacrifices of Vietnamese people during the war. Đặng Thùy Trâm's short life remains a powerful example of patriotism and dedication.
