PART III: READING
Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question.
LEARNING TO LIVE IN A NEW CULTURE
When Minh arrived in Australia for a one-year student exchange programme, he was excited about studying in an international environment. During the first few weeks, however, he experienced culture shock. Some everyday behaviours were different from those he was familiar with in Việt Nam.
For example, Minh was surprised that many Australian students addressed their teachers by their first names. His classmates often expressed their opinions directly, even when they disagreed with one another. At first, Minh thought that this communication style sounded impolite, so he was sometimes afraid to join classroom discussions.
Minh gradually became more comfortable after joining the school's international student club. He met students who had experienced similar difficulties and learned that asking questions was an effective way to avoid misunderstandings. His host family also helped him. They explained unwritten social rules and encouraged him to share Vietnamese food and traditions with their friends.
After several months, Minh adjusted to his new environment without losing his Vietnamese identity. He realised that adapting to another culture did not mean giving up his own values. Instead, it meant learning to understand different ways of thinking and behaving. By the end of the programme, Minh had become more confident, independent and culturally aware.
