PART III: READING
Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question.
GLOBALISATION AND LOCAL CULTURES
Advances in transportation and communication have connected countries more closely than ever before. People can now travel, work and communicate across national borders with relative ease. As a result, ideas, products and cultural practices can quickly spread from one part of the world to another.
Globalisation offers several cultural benefits. People can enjoy food, music, films and festivals from many countries without travelling far from home. International exchange programmes also give young people opportunities to learn new languages and experience different ways of life. Such experiences can encourage respect and understanding among cultures.
However, some people are concerned that globalisation may weaken local traditions. International brands and foreign entertainment sometimes become more popular than local products and art forms. Some young people may consider traditional practices old-fashioned and stop following them. Minority languages may also disappear if they are not taught to younger generations.
Many communities are therefore taking action to protect their cultural heritage. Schools offer lessons in local languages, governments support traditional artists, and towns organise cultural festivals. These efforts show that societies can participate in a globalised world while preserving the customs that make them unique.
