PART III: READING
Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question.
A SCHOOL COMPOSTING PROJECT
Last year, members of the Eco Club at Riverside High School discovered that the school cafeteria was producing nearly thirty-five kilograms of food waste every week. Most of this waste was being sent to a landfill, where it produced harmful greenhouse gases as it decomposed. The students decided to establish a composting project.
The school placed special collection bins in the cafeteria. Students put fruit peels, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and tea bags into these bins. Meat, dairy products and oily food were not accepted because they could attract animals and create unpleasant smells. The collected waste was mixed with dry leaves and pieces of cardboard.
At first, the compost pile became too wet and attracted flies. The students solved the problem by adding more dry material and covering the bins properly. They also turned the compost every week to allow air to enter the mixture. After approximately three months, the organic waste had developed into dark, nutrient-rich compost.
The school used the finished compost in its vegetable garden instead of buying chemical fertiliser. The project reduced the amount of waste sent to the landfill and helped students understand how food waste could become a useful resource. The Eco Club now plans to organise composting workshops for local families.
