PART III: READING
Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question.
MAKING A TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL GREENER
The Spring Lights Festival attracts thousands of visitors to Lakeside every year. In the past, the event also produced a large amount of waste. Food stalls used disposable cups and plates, plastic decorations covered the streets, and visitors left rubbish in public spaces. Traditional fireworks also created smoke and noise.
Last year, the organisers introduced several changes to make the festival more environmentally friendly. They required food sellers to use reusable or compostable containers. Visitors paid a small deposit for reusable cups and received their money back when they returned them. Plastic decorations were replaced with decorations made from cloth, bamboo and recycled paper.
The organisers also placed clearly marked recycling and compost bins around the festival area. Volunteers stood near the bins to help visitors separate their waste correctly. Public transport services were increased, and visitors were encouraged to leave their cars at home. An energy-efficient light show replaced part of the traditional firework display.
The changes reduced the festival's total waste by more than forty per cent. However, the organisers admitted that further improvement was needed. Some visitors still put rubbish in the wrong bins, and a few food sellers complained about the cost of environmentally friendly packaging. The town plans to provide more training and financial support before the next festival.
