PART III: READING
Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question.
GREEN SPACES IN GROWING CITIES
Rapid urbanisation has caused many cities to replace fields, forests and gardens with roads and buildings. As urban areas become more crowded, planners are recognising that parks and other green spaces are essential rather than optional parts of city development.
Trees and plants provide several environmental benefits. They absorb carbon dioxide, reduce air pollution and provide shade during hot weather. Green areas can also absorb rainwater, which helps prevent urban flooding. In addition, parks give residents places to exercise, relax and interact with other members of the community.
The city of Westbridge recently transformed an abandoned railway line into a long public park. It now includes walking paths, cycle lanes, gardens and children's play areas. The park connects several neighbourhoods and allows residents to travel safely without using motor vehicles.
However, access to green spaces is not always equal. Wealthier districts often contain large, well-maintained parks, while crowded, low-income areas may have very few trees or public gardens. City planners are therefore introducing rules that require new housing projects to include accessible green areas for all residents.
